In a nutshell

Sony TCD-D8, you dreamed it, Sony made it. Fifteen years after the invention of the cassette Walkman, the Japanese manufacturer designed a DAT recorder that's hardly larger ! Very popular for wild tracks and backup copies, on documentary and video shooting (when sound is recorded on camera), DAT puts sound mixer's and production's minds at ease since it uses no data compression: unlike MiniDisc (ATRAC), none of the finest signal detail is lost. It's sturdy and easy to use, though generally it needs to be used with a mixer because of its poor connectors and microphone inputs. Besides, like MiniDisc, the small size of its buttons and controls can make it rather tricky to use; but, contrary to MiniDisc, power autonomy is much smaller because of tape transport.

What they think about

Due to its small size, the TCD-D8 is a linear recorder lacking any digital outputs. To go to the non-linear digital world with a DAT tape recorded on TCD-D8, the only solution is to copy, in real-time, this tape to a digital non-linear workstation (Pyramix, Protools, Avid aso), using a DAT reader like portable Fostex PD-4 or studio Sony 7040 via their AES outputs. You could also copy the DAT tape to a portable non-linear recorder provided with AES inputs like the Aaton Cantar or the Fostex PD-6.

Beautiful machine. I used as a back up for a 16mm project once. But MY QUESTION is how do you go digital with this?
