The PIX 240 records any high definition video signal from a camera, via HDMI or HD-SDI in QuickTime format (.mov), with the Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD compression codec on Compact Flash or 2.5" HDD. The video signal, on playback and recording, can be taken up simultaneously on the HDMI and HD-SDI outputs. With 10-bit internal video processing, it provides up and down conversion from 480i to 1080p, and HD-SD image ratio conversion.
As for sound, the core business of Sound Devices, the PIX 240 allows either recording of the audio signals included in the HDMI (dual channel) or in the HD-SDI (eight channels), or recording of audio signals from the two mic/line analog inputs, with 48V Phantom, on two symmetrical XLR3F or from the two digital inputs (2 AES pairs) on the same XLR. A two channel XLR5M balanced analog output, and a stereo headphone output complete the audio section. An adjustable digital delay enables analog audio output synchronization setting, without changing the synchronization of recorded audio and video signals .
The PIX 240 includes an internal Ambient Time Code generator/reader, on BNC or 5-pin Lemo, with BNC Genlock output. This Time Code generator can be jammed from HDMI or HD-SDI video signals, from an external source, or be used as a master sync/Time Code source.
In addition to a Compact Flash slot, the PIX 240 also has a slot for the PIX-CADDY with an SSD drive (or a mechanical SATA HDD) ; the PIX-CADDY can also operate as a Firewire 800, external SATA or USB 3.0 data interface. The Compact Flash card and the hard drive are formatted in UDF volume, a format compatible with all classic OS, Windows, Mac OS, Linux.
The PIX 240 can be powered either with one or two Sony L type batteries, or with an external 10-18 V DC power supply on 4-pin Hirose. Power consumption is 1 A in stop mode, 2.4 A in record/play mode using SSD.
Although the fan is running continuously, the PIX 240 is extremely quiet if not inaudible. The PIX 240 is metallic carbon fiber molded, and so is especially sturdy.
